|
The goal is to provide new paperback dictionaries
to all AVID 7th graders in the Carlsbad, Oceanside,
and Vista School Districts. AVID is Advancement Via
Individual Determination. It is a program that
started in San Diego County and helps middle

school students with study skills and college goals. The project was initiated several years
ago after a guest speaker told of her expereince as a middle school student student and couldn't
do her homework because she didn't have a
dictionary at home. Her solution was to take a dictionary from her classroom. Her story
touched our hearts and put us into action. The first year or two we gathered used
dictionaries to distribute to middle school students. Recently, we were able to make
contact with the So Cal Dictionary Project people. Hence, we are able to purchase new
paperback dictionaries for $1.00 each. The third year, we raised enough money
within the branch to provide all 7th grade Oceanside Unified School District AVID
students with a paperback dictionary.(about 790 students).
Each dictionary has a bookplate which states that this book is presented by the American
Association of University Women, Carlsbad, Oceanside, Vista with space for the child's
name.
